I run computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of fire smoke spread and of wind flows around and inside buildings. I build the models and run the computations in Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS).
About me
My name is Imran Cosadia. I am an engineer with a doctorate in fluid mechanics. Fifteen years of CFD, then five years of data science, which I now use to industrialise my simulation campaigns. I am also a research engineer working on natural smoke ventilation in windy conditions, in La Réunion.
What I deliver
- # The assumptions, written down and agreed before any simulation is run.
- # Velocity, temperature, visibility and radiation fields.
- # The indicators: tenability, smoke-free height, flow patterns, flow rates through openings.
- # An analysis note: what the results show, what they support, and where they stop.
Applications
- Smoke ventilation of roomsSmoke, tenability, vents, from the plant room to the warehouse.
- Wind and smoke interactionHow the wind on site affects natural smoke ventilation.
- Active smoke ventilationVents driven by detection: activation scenarios compared.
- Indoor airflowCross ventilation, comfort and air renewal.
- Thermal stratificationHot layers, smoke-free height, time available.
- Urban wakeWind speed-up, recirculation around buildings, pedestrian comfort.
How I work
# FDS is the code used for the smoke computations and for the wind computations alike. It is a large-eddy simulation code, based on finite differences, developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
# The simulations are systematically post-processed by an in-house automated tool, which speeds up parametric campaigns and the verification work: convergence, plume and wind resolution, sensitivity studies, comparison with correlations.
In practice
# I work remotely, from my own office. Meetings by video call; site visits possible depending on the project.
# Non-disclosure agreement signed on request.
# What I do not do: no fire safety report, no regulatory submission, no direct relationship with your client. You keep the project; I supply the technical material.
# The results are technical input. Regulatory interpretation and responsibility for the submission remain with the engineering consultancy.
